Red-Directive

The RED Directive is a European regulation that sets requirements for radio equipment placed on the market within the EU. Epson has informed us that as of the 1st of August 2025, new safety requirements will take effect for all devices with Wi-Fi functionality (including those with optional Wi-Fi dongles).

Epson writes:

"As part of our commitment to the highest security and compliance standards, we would like to inform you about the upcoming EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED), which will come into effect for devices imported into the EU from 1st of August 2025. This directive mandates new security requirements for all devices with Wi-Fi functionality, including those using optional Wi-Fi dongles.

Epson has accordingly adapted all affected printers and equipped them with new firmware that is not compatible with the old printer drivers. Please note that the first devices with updated firmware are about to be shipped and will only function if a driver update is performed. Depending on how you operate the printers, additional steps may be required, which we will explain in detail in our webinar.

Already installed printers can also be updated with the new firmware/driver. However, this is not mandatory and is only necessary if you want all installed devices to run on a uniform software version.

Our commitment ensures that our products comply with legal requirements. We ask all our distributors and resellers to promptly pass this important information on to their customers.

RED-compliant specification changes:

To meet the cybersecurity requirements of the European Radio Equipment Directive (RED), Epson is making the following changes to the product specifications for devices sold in Europe from 1st of August 2025:

  • Factory default passwords are unique for each device (these passwords are attached to the product on a label).
  • Security is ensured from the time of shipment from the factory
  • Authentication is required for online communication.
  • Online communication is encrypted and treated confidentially.
  • Wireless communication is encrypted and treated confidentially.
  • Customers are informed about RED-compliant printers through an insert in the packaging.
  • Authentication is required for firmware updates and security-related settings.
  • A mechanism to notify customers about the availability of new RED-compliant firmware should be integrated.
